Stroke Education Video Series for Therapists

Preventing Shoulder Pain

30 minute videotape

This video demonstrates a program of very simple, but important steps, to prevent shoulder pain. Shoulder pain interferes with the entire rehabilitation program. A stroke survivor with a painful shoulder doesn't want to get out of bed, get dressed, walk and even sleeping is very difficult. Most painful shoulders can been prevented, if those caring for the patient are better informed and better trained.

In order to prevent shoulder pain, first we need to understand which are susceptible to trauma and how trauma occurs. Next, every person working with the patient (therapists, nurses, family members and caregivers) will need to know how to protect the shoulder from injury.

Topics Include:

  • Step-by-step methods used for shoulder range of motion for the stroke patient
  • Common handling methods which cause trauma and pain to the hemiplegic shoulder
  • Therapeutic handling of the shoulder, protecting structures which are at risk
  • Graphics to show how the structures of the shoulder and how they work together
  • Six simple, but important, reminders of how to prevent shoulder pain
  • Scapular mobilization
