Bilateral Activities for the Nonfunctional Hand

Therapists should use each and every opportunity to incorporate the hemiparetic hand into daily functional tasks - even when the hand is non-functional. Choose tasks that require smooth, easy movements.

Activities of daily living (ADLs) and simple tasks in the home can provide excellent opportunities for stroke survivors to relearn use of their involved hand.

First, place their involved hand on the object. An object that fits comfortably in the hand works the best. Next, place their strong hand over their involved hand to help them "hold" it during the task. Give assistance if necessary.
